Garmin G6 – Most noticeable differences from it’s predecessor the Approach G5:

• The Garmin G6 comes with 25,000 preloaded golf courses! That’s 7,500 more courses than come loaded on it’s predecessor. I believe you can download the additional courses on the G5, but preloaded IS REALLY nice.
• Size – this is a pretty dramatic difference. The Garmin G6 is 3.7″ in height, 2.1″ wide and only .8″ in depth. It’s predecessor is significantly larger.
• Weight – considering the size difference, it’s no surprise that the weight of the Garmin G6 is 3.37 ounces, which is less than half the weight of the G5.
• The G6 has a rechargeable Lithium Polymer battery that lasts up to 15 hours. The G5 used AAs.
• The scorecard on the Garmin G6 has added options for scoring: Stroke Play, Stableford, Skins and Match Play with adjustable handicaps
• The G6 also has colored arcs indicating 100, 150, 200 and 250 yards to help you determine where to layup. With touchscreen targeting, this is will be a nice addition.

Now available in WHITE! Garmin S1 Approach golf watch is one of the highest rated GPS golf rangefinders on the market, which makes it an excellent candidate for additional colors. Besides that, we’ve noticed that the White Garmin Approach S1 is often on sale for quite a bit less than the original black golf watch.

You may want to read our complete Garmin S1 Review, but this GPS golf watch is the highest rated GPS device we’ve found, with the exception of the Bushnell Hybrid laser rangefinder. It doesn’t offer a huge amount of features, but does offer the ultimate in convenience. The Garmin Approach S1 gives yardage to the front, middle and back of every green. It automatically goes from hole to hole, so there is very little user input required. It’s designed for golfers who want information quickly and no unnecessary distractions.

• Not enough detailed info on screen – hazards are displayed, but no detailed information about trees
• Tough in bright sunlight – 2 Notes: 1) Users who cited this as a problem did not say what type of batteries they were using. One user indicated that with alkaline batteries, the screen was not as bright as with rechargeable. 2) Other users noted that if you held unit directly at sun, it was easier to see.)
• Bulky
• Not enough courses – Although Garmin has a very large database of golf courses and adds to it at least quarterly, before making this purchase, you will want to check to see if the courses you play regularly are on their list.

There were a few users who wished for larger numbers, particularly on the distances to hazards. However, since most said it was easy to read, we did not want to specifically list this as a Con. This is a pretty large display when it comes to these types of portable units and unfortunately, there is only so much room for information. We’ve included this video, so you can see for yourself.
