In our GolfBuddy LD2 Ladies Golf Watch Review, we explore the comments of dozens of users and look for common complaints as well as common points of praise.

GolfBuddy Ladies LD2 User Rating:
3.44 Stars 3.44 out of 5 (77 reviews)

Score compiled from multiple sources.

Although many ladies wear golf watches, the GolfBuddy LD2 is the only one that is specifically designed for those looking for a more elegant style. If you are in that group, this may be the watch for you, but keep reading to find out why you may or may not want to choose the GolfBuddy LD2.

First, let’s take a look at the features of the GolfBuddy LD2 Ladies Golf Watch:
  • Distances to front/center/back of the green.
  • Distances to hazards
  • Dual shot distance measurement
  • Automatic course/hold recognition
  • GPS Odometer
  • USGA/R&A compliant – legal for handicap and tournament play
  • GolfBuddy LD2 Ladies Golf Watch Review imageSmall, lightweight, stylish, & comfortable with Swarovski® crystals in light sapphire.
  • Genuine leather strap with alligator grain
  • Premium mineral crystal lens
  • Stainless steel crown button and bezel
  • Water Resistant Watch mode (time)
  • Rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides 6 hours in GPS modes or 9-weeks in standard watch mode
  • No membership or download fees

What we discovered from analyzing the feedback of dozens of users, is that most users were in one of two categories…

  • They loved the watch and its performance.
  • They experienced problems with the functioning of the watch and frequently were also unhappy with GolfBuddy customer support.

Normally, we would not even consider recommending a watch with ratings as low as those on the GolfBuddy LD2. However, since this is the only true ladies golf watch and the reviews indicate that it’s possible that you will receive a watch that works well, we have to consider that this may well be the right golf watch for some people. That said, we would only recommend this GolfBuddy ladies golf watch for the individual who doesn’t want a watch that looks like a sports watch and who also is prepared to take a chance on getting a watch that needs to be serviced or replaced.

If you still need help deciding if the GolfBuddy LD2 Ladies Golf Watch is for you, take a look at the common themes we noted in user feedback.

Garmin Approach S20Read Full Review

We’ve put the Garmin S20 at the top of our list because it’s an outstanding golf watch at very low price point. Besides that, it’s a worthy activity and sleep tracker and can aslo recieve notifications from your smartphone.

As a golf watch, it provides distance to the front, middle, and back of the green on the main screen, as well as the green shape. You can manually adjust the pin placement and you can also view distances to the front and back of hazards as well as doglegs. There’s a feature called AutoShot that automatically records the distance of your shots. When you combine the watch stats with Garmin Connect, your post-game analysis gets really interesting. It can also pair up with Garmin TruSwing™ if you want swing metrics. We love that it automatically updates courses you play regularly, looks and feels better than most golf watches, and it has 15 hours of battery life in GPS mode or 8 weeks in activity mode!

Bushnell Neo Ion Golf WatchRead Full Review

Although Bushnell is known for their laser rangefinders, they really seemed to have nailed it in the golf watch category as well. They have figured out that what a majority of golfers want is not bells and whistles, but simply a comfortable golf watch that is easy to use and provides distances to greens and hazards. The Neo Ion brings the same winning formula to a smaller, lighter, and better looking golf GPS watch. Best of all, the battery life will easily go three full rounds!

GolfBuddy VoiceXRead Full Review

The GolfBuddy Voice line has been a huge success from the beginning. The VoiceX is the latest in this line and has a few nice upgrades from its predecessor the GolfBuddy Voice 2. The most notable improvement is that it adds Bluetooth connectivity to your smartphone for automatic updates to the golf course you’re playing when you enter golf mode. The screen is a little larger and it has a Big Numbers mode and manual pin placement capability. It also adds a fairly detailed GPS activity tracker for runners and walkers. It may sacrifice some battery life for the extra features, but should still easily get 2 full rounds. A watchband is available separately.

GolfBuddy Voice 2Read Full Review

GolfBuddy just keeps building on a winning theme. The GolfBuddy Voice 2 claims 14 hours of battery life. That’s four hours more than the GolfBuddy VS4! It’s water resistant, has the choice of male or female voice, and of course provides distances to the front, middle, and back of the green. It’s available in three different colors as well. The wristband can be ordered separately on Amazon.

The GolfBuddy Voice gives visual and auditory distances to the front, middle and back of every green. It’s simple, convenient and reasonably priced, and the ratings are fantastic! However, GolfBuddy has several newer models that are similarly priced, have high ratings, and better battery life! Check out the latest from GolfBuddy.

The Garmin Approach S6 is the only golf watch on the market with fairway views and manual targeting. That’s what makes this watch worth the extra money. GolfBuddy Ladies LD2Read Full Review

The GolfBuddy LD2 is the only golf GPS watch we know of that is truly designed as a ladies golf watch. It gets high marks for appearance, as well as accuracy, ease of use, and screen readability. Unfortunately, we saw a fairly high number of users who experienced problems with the watch and poor customer service in resolving their issues. The bottom line is that if you’re looking for a nice looking ladies golf watch, this is your only option. If you’re a little bit lucky, you won’t have any issues with it and you’ll love it. If you’re a little unlucky, you might have to return it and try again or struggle with GolfBuddy customer service to get the issue resolved.

Bushnell Excel Golf GPS WatchRead Full Review

The Bushnell Excel golf watch takes a step in a new direction from previous Bushnell golf watches. The extremely popular Bushnell Neo Ion, as well as earlier models, are not loaded with features but perform extremely well at providing what most golfers want – distances to the front/middle/back of the green and hazards.

The Excel tries to merge that concept of simplicity with some added features by adding Bluetooth connectivity to your iPhone or Android phone and providing a free full-featured golf GPS app to go with it. You can now get course updates through the app and get notifications from your phone, right on your watch. You can also use the swing metrics feature to analyze your swing and review the data on the app. You’ll also find weather information and a step counter on this watch. We’re looking forward to seeing how this watch performs in the real world!

Our Bushnell Excel Golf Watch Review will be available soon!

We’re excited about Bushnell’s latest entry into the golf watch market because this is their first effort at adding a wider variety of features. However, we don’t think they will be retiring the highly-rated Bushnell Neo Ion anytime soon, because of it’s appeal to golfers who just want an easy-to-use watch which provides distances to their targets and not much more.

Although it’s clear Bushnell is still trying to ensure the new watch is simple to use, the Excel adds features that will appeal to golfers who want more.

Bushnell Excel Golf GPS Watch User Rating:
2.86 Stars 2.86 out of 5 (18 reviews)

Score compiled from multiple sources.

Let’s start with the Bushnell Excel key features:
  • Weather Information
  • Bluetooth integration with iPhone or Android smartphone for course updates without needing to sync with a computer
  • E-mail, text, and other notifications from your iPhone or Android smartphone.
  • The Swing Pro feature allows the user to monitor swing speed and swing tempo. This will be interesting for those who spend time on the driving range.
  • Book tee times (also works through the App)
  • Easy-to-Read Front/Center/Back Distances
  • Up to 4 Hazard Distances Per Hole
  • Pre-loaded with 35,000+ courses from 30 countries
  • Shot distance calculator
  • Auto Course Recognition
  • Auto Hole Advance
  • Pedometer and Fitness Trackers
  • Full front optical mounted color display with auto brightness adjustment
  • Stopwatch/Alarm/Timer
  • Waterproof
  • No membership or download fees
Included Bushnell App features:
  • App included with purchase of Excel Watch
  • Full color aerial views of hole layouts with distances
  • 3D flyovers with distances
  • Scorekeeping
  • Book tee times (also can be done on the watch)
  • Swing analysis stats
  • Pedometer and Fitness Trackers

The main features that Bushnell left off of the watch and put solely onto the app are the scorecard, stat-tracking, and full hole views with touch targeting. The Swing Pro features and weather information can found on the watch, but Swing Pro data can be analyzed more fully within the app. The idea of having to use the app during your round would seem to make the notifications component unnecessary, however we can see some users only using the app for it’s Swing Pro metrics on the driving range and still wanting notifications during the round. It remains to be seen if users will like Bushnell’s implementation of these advanced features, but we’re optimistic.

Garmin Approach S20 Review

‘Garmin Approach S20’

Order from Amazon

Our Garmin Approach S20 Review is based upon feedback from over 100 users. Overall the ratings are reasonably high for a golf watch with this many features, but there are a few things that were clearly outstanding on this watch. Although the number of positive comments far outweighed the negative, there are still a few issues on both sides that are worth discussing.

Garmin Approach S20 User Rating:
4.31 Stars 4.31 out of 5 (326 reviews)

Score compiled from multiple sources.

When the Garmin S20 first came out, we said it wasn’t for everyone. However, the price is so low now and the performance/features may be the best we’ve ever seen in a golf watch. You can use it for just the basics, or you enjoy some of the advanced features as well.

For those reason, we highly recommend it for any golfer. And if you happen to be a little bit of a golf geek or a fitness enthusiast, you’re going to love the features of this watch! The S20 combines smartwatch features of phone notifications, activity tracking, and sleep tracking with a golf watch loaded with features.

Let’s start with the Garmin Approach S20 noteworthy features:
  • Distances to the front, middle, and back of the green.
  • Green shape from your point of view.
  • Manual pin positioning.
  • Distances to the front and back of hazards and doglegs.
  • AutoShot round analyzer measures and auto-records shot distances.
  • Pairs with Garmin Connect for interesting post-game analysis.
  • Pairs with Garmin TruSwing™ sensor for metrics to improve your swing consistency. (TruSwing™ available for purchase separately on Amazon.)
  • CourseView feature automatically updates frequently played courses for free.
  • High-resolution display easily readable in bright sunlight.
  • Activity tracking – steps and sleep.
  • Receive smart notifications for incoming calls, texts and other alerts².
  • Attractive watchband design.

Now let’s take a look at the pros and cons mentioned the most in the user feedback that we reviewed.

Garmin Approach S20 Review – Most Mentioned Pros
  • Accuracy – Overwhelmingly, the most frequent positive comment was about the accuracy of the S20. We didn’t find any complaints on this point.
  • Ease of Use – Many users commmented on the ease of use, however a few users had difficulty learning how to use the features.
  • Battery Life – There were plenty of rave reviews about the battery life of the Garmin S20. The only complaint we saw was from a user who was using it as an everyday watch.
  • Screen Readability – The comments about the clarity and readability of the screen were more enthusiastic than we generally see and there were zero complaints.
  • Responsiveness – Compliments about the responsiveness of any golf GPS is fairly unusual, but it must be good on the S20, because it was mentioned frequently.
  • Hazards – Many users commented on the accuracy of the hazard information.
  • Features – Quite a few users commented on the extensive features available on the watch.
  • Value – There were a number of comments about the Garmin Approach S20 being a good value.
  • Attractiveness – Several users mentioned the attractiveness of the watch.
  • Size and Weight – The size and weight was mentioned as a positive in quite a few comments.
Garmin Approach S20 Review – Most Mentioned Cons
  • Software Problems – A number of users experienced problems with the watch working correctly. In most cases, a software update corrected the problem, but some users had to return the watch. Garmin had a glitch with an update last year that has since been corrected.
  • User Manual – There were complaints about the lack of clarity in the user manual. That no doubt led to some other complaints.
  • Ease of Use – Some users had trouble learning how to navigate the S20. As mentioned on the previous point, a better user manual might have helped with this.
  • Autoshot – Although there were a few users that loved this feature, there were several complaints that it didn’t track a fair number of shots and there was no way to manually input a shot when the watch didn’t pick it up.
  • Garmin Connect – Several users felt that the inability to make corrections within Garmin Connect made the scoring and stats worthless. Others felt it provided interesting and helpful information.
  • Difficult to fasten – Only a couple of users complained that it was difficult to put the Garmin S20 on their wrist.

We believe the Garmin Approach S20 is an excellent golf watch for anyone and for golf geeks like us, it’s amazing! If you are concerned about having too many advanced features, there are a few other great choices on our “Best Budget-Friendly Golf Watch” list.

GolfBuddy Voice 2 Review

‘GolfBuddy Voice 2’

Order from Amazon

We are currently working on our GolfBuddy Voice 2 Review but it’s not too early to say that GolfBuddy has another winner on its hands. Even if you don’t want to use the voice feature, these intuitive little devices are well worth considering.

GolfBuddy Voice 2 User Rating:
4.40 Stars 4.40 out of 5 (118 reviews)

Score compiled from multiple sources.

GolfBuddy has golf distance measuring devices in just about every category, but the one where they seem to dominate is the small voice models. This is their fourth entry into this category and with each new model, comes subtle but significant improvements. The GolfBuddy Voice 2 seems to be continuing that trend.

The predecessor to the Voice 2 was the GolfBuddy VS4 and although the Voice 2 has a nicer appearance, the size, shape, and weight are identical. In fact, there are only three differences that we noticed. The most important improvement is that the Voice 2 gets 14 hours of battery life versus only 10 hours on the VS4. That’s a really nice improvement!

We also like that the clip on the Voice 2 is built into the unit itself, where the previous model came with a clip that had to be attached. You can still get a watchband or belt clip that flips up if you prefer. The other new feature won’t make much functional difference to most users. The Voice 2 can have either a female or male voice and if you want to change it, you’ll need to make the update on your computer and then sync.

The original GolfBuddy Voice is still available, as is the VS4. Both models cost a little less than the newest model, but we think it’s well worth it to buy the GolfBuddy Voice 2 for the extra battery life.

GolfBuddy Voice 2 Notable Features
  • Audio and visual distances to front/center/back of the green
  • Automatic course and hole recognition
  • Shot measurement feature
  • Flip screen feature allows it to be viewed “right side up” when worn on your belt.
  • Rechargeable battery provides up to 14-hour battery life
  • Male/Female voice options through FREE GolfBuddy Manager Program
  • Legal for tournament play
  • Water resistant
  • Multilingual (up to 11 languages, 8 preloaded)
  • Dynamic Green View technology with distance readings from the golfer’s perspective

We don’t think you can go wrong with the GolfBuddy Voice 2, but if the voice feature isn’t important to you, you may also want to consider the Garmin Approach G10 which includes scorecard and stat-tracking.

Bushnell Neo Ion Review

‘Bushnell Neo Ion Golf Watch’

Order from Amazon

Our Bushnell Neo Ion Review is based upon lots of user feedback. We look for common themes, whether they are praise or complaints and summarize our findings.

Bushnell Neo Ion Golf Watch User Rating:
4.24 Stars 4.24 out of 5 (443 reviews)

Score compiled from multiple sources.

Although there are golf watches that do much more than the Bushnell Neo Ion, this is the golf watch that we believe most golfers should buy! It is simple to use, provides distances to the front, middle, and back of the greens, as well as hazards. In our experience, that is the information that most golfers need and want on their golf watches.

Don’t get us wrong, we love the Garmin golf watches that have smartwatch features and fitness trackers built in, but for the basics, the Bushnell Neo Ion is our top pick!

Let’s start with the Neo Ion’s key features:
  • Pre-loaded with 35,000+ courses from 30 countries
  • Outstanding Battery Life will last three full rounds
  • Auto course recognition and auto hole advance
  • Up to 4 Hazard/Layup distances per hole
  • Shot distance calculator
  • Comfortable dual injected silicone sports band
  • Round odometer
  • No membership or download fees

Let’s just say the ratings on this golf watch are excellent – among the best we’ve seen for a golf watch. Bushnell doesn’t get fancy with a touchscreen or graphics, but they continue to make significant improvements with each new golf watch they release. Full battery indicator for Bushnell Neo Ion

The best part of the Bushnell Neo Ion is the battery life. This was the most talked about feature and users loved they could play three full rounds before charging it.

Accuracy in golf GPS devices is often misunderstood and very difficult to compare. The reason is that there are multiple factors that determine the accuracy of the distances, which means that each user’s experience in any given situation may be different. Therefore, most of the time we’ll find both positive and negative comments regarding accuracy. Amazingly, we haven’t heard anything negative about the accuracy of the Bushnell Neo Ion’s accuracy. We’re not saying it will always be perfect, just that there were lots of positive comments and zero negative comments in the feedback we reviewed.

Besides battery life, we think “ease of use” should be the biggest factor in choosing a golf GPS. There was no shortage of positive comments on the subject and again, not even one negative. With that said, there were several users who complained that there were only two hazards or layups listed per hole. Most likely the reason for the complaint is that these users didn’t know how to scroll down to the second page. (FYI: the button on the bottom right of the watch will do it!)

Users really like the look of the Bushnell Neo Ion and felt it improved their games. They overall felt great about the value and also the number of courses.

There weren’t all that many complaints about the Bushnell Neo Ion, but several people did mention that the Auto Course Recognition was slow. After it found the course, there no complaints about the responsiveness.

A few users had defective units and a couple of those users were unhappy with the customer service. There were also a few complaints about the durability of the watchband. Several users also struggled with getting the charging clip connected. I don’t believe any of them considered that a deal breaker, but rather were wishing it was a little easier.

Keep in mind that 80% of the user feedback was positive. We think this is an excellent choice and as of this writing, are putting it at the top of recommended golf watches list.

This is our Garmin Vivoactive review. If you are looking for a model that includes heart rate, check out the Vivoactive HR.

The Garmin Vivoactive gets good reviews as a multi-sport watch. However, there is minimal feedback from golfers on this watch. We don’t think it’s the best golf watch out there, but if you want a multi-sport smartwatch that you can use for golf as well running, biking, swimming, and/or walking, this is a really good value.

Garmin vivoactive User Rating:
4.00 Stars 4.00 out of 5 (1613 reviews)

Score compiled from multiple sources.

If you are looking for a golf watch with a nice activity tracker built-in, we suggest the Garmin Approach S20.

For Golfers: You get distance to the front, middle and back of every green, plus distances to layups and doglegs. It also has a shot measuring feature and a stroke-play scorecard for one player.

What you won’t get that can be found on most golf watches are distances to hazards, green shapes, and in many cases manual pin placements. If you’re not looking for a multi-sport watch, we suggest taking a look at our picks for “Best Golf Watch“.

Beyond Golf: The vívoactive is thin and lightweight, with a very readable screen. Apps for golf, running, swimming, biking and walking are built right into the watch. Garmin has been a leader in all of these sports watch markets for years.

The vívoactive has an accelerometer, so it also serves as a fitness tracker to track your steps and daily activity. It will even remind you if you haven’t been moving for awhile.

Like the latest Garmin golf watches, the vívoactive will have access to notifications from your smartphone. And like any good smartwatch, you’ll also be able to customize the look of your watch face!

Garmin also allows third-party developers to create apps for the vívoactive. That means many other apps will be available and already you can find a weather app, stock market app and more. We think it’s possible that a third-party golf app might even be able to make it a better golf watch in the future.

TomTom Golfer GPS Watch Review

‘TomTom Golfer’

Order from Amazon

We are definitely looking forward to doing our TomTom Golfer GPS Watch Review. Besides being a very nice looking watch, TomTom appears to have taken a slightly different approach to displaying hazard distances. It’s a much more simplistic look than rival Garmin’s latest watches, but at a glance, we think the simplicity might work in TomTom’s favor.

TomTom Golfer User Rating:
3.70 Stars 3.70 out of 5 (100 reviews)

Score compiled from multiple sources.

One thing we’ve already noticed about TomTom’s golf watch is that it includes distances to hazards as well as layup distances to doglegs and 100, 150 and 200 yardage markers. Our current top golf watch picks are the Garmin S4 and the Bushnell neo XS. The Garmin only has the layup distances and the Bushnell only has hazards. If TomTom executes this well, having both will be a big selling point.

The latest Garmin watch, the S6 has access to hazard information via the CourseView screen which displays graphic views of part of the hole. Unfortunately, it takes more than a quick glance to figure out what you’re seeing. The TomTom graphics are totally basic, which might actually make it easier and quicker to locate the distance you need.

The TomTom Golfer doesn’t have a touchscreen or any buttons on the face. Instead, there is a touchpad on the watchband. It’s a little unusual looking, but overall, the watch looks great. It comes preloaded with 34,000+ courses, is rainproof and it has a scorecard.

Garmin S6 Review

‘Garmin Approach S6’

Order from Amazon

Just when we thought the Garmin Approach series had reached the peak of potential in a golf GPS watch with the Garmin S4, they introduced one with even more features. In our testing for the Garmin S6 Review, we found some pros and some cons, but we can definitely recommend this golf watch for some golfers. Keep reading to see if it’s for you.

Garmin Approach S6 User Rating:
3.75 Stars 3.75 out of 5 (290 reviews)

Score compiled from multiple sources.

First of all, let’s take a look at the features that set Garmin S6 apart from the Garmin S4:

  • Dedicated CourseView button. We love the dedicated GreenView button on the S4 that made it easy to see the green shape and adjust the pin location to get more precise distance. The S6 replaces that button with a CourseView button. The first press of the CourseView button shows a graphic view of your landing area. This is pretty cool and important when you are playing unfamiliar courses. You can manually pinpoint and get distance a target, but remember this is a small screen, so not quite as easy as doing it on a handheld unit. A tap on the top of the screen will take you to the GreenView which shows the shape of the green and surrounding hazards. It also allows for manual pin positioning for getting a more precise distance. Although it is only one extra button press to get to the GreenView, we found it a little annoying on approach shots that the green view didn’t come up immediately.
  • PinPointer blind shot assistance tells you where the pin is, even if you can’t see it. It’s not as good as having your caddie run to the top of the hill to show you the line, but it’s way better than nothing if you can’t see where you need to be aiming. Since this isn’t a feature that you will use often, the trick is remembering how to get to it! (Tap the screen until it shows up.)
  • SwingTempo™ and TempoTraining™. Although some users like this feature, we weren’t sold. We had a five-handicapper with a decent swing test this and the swing tempo didn’t even remotely match with the “average pro” tempo. Do we think our test subject should spend hours on the range trying to create a swing that matches this watch… No! If you happen to be working with an instructor on Tempo, it’s possible that this tool could be useful, but it’s definitely not a feature the would convince us to buy this watch.
  • SwingStrength™. We had high hopes for the SwingStrength aspect of the Garmin S6, but in our testing, we just couldn’t get readings that made sense. To set it up, you choose what type of club you are using… for instance “short iron”. Then you hit a shot and if you think it was a great shot, the watch will use that as the baseline swing. For our tests, we used wedges, hoping to learn how hard to swing for those shots closer to the green that don’t require a full swing. Unfortunately, most of our half swings registered over 100% on the SwingStrength meter even though they clearly weren’t going as far as our baseline shot. As much as we like idea of this feature, we’re hoping Garmin will put some more work into developing this technology.

Like the Garmin S4, the Garmin S6 has a glove-friendly, high-resolution touchscreen. Distance to the front, middle and back of every green, plus par and hole number shows on the main screen. In addition to the doglegs and layups already included with the course maps, you can save custom points for future reference. As with most GPS devices, you can measure your shots.

We think the scorecard and stat-tracking features are super easy to use and it can also utilize handicap information. The Garmin S6 can connect via bluetooth to your iPhone and get notifications but we didn’t always stay connected. It comes preloaded 38,000 international courses and never have any subscriptions or fees.

We like the Garmin Connect website and seeing our rounds and stats broken down in different ways, but we do wish that the site provided a way to edit your round information. If you simply forgot to record the last hole of your last round before uploading, you can’t really do anything except delete the round or your stats will be off.

In conclusion, we don’t think the Garmin Approach S6 is for everyone, but if you have the budget for it and frequently play unfamiliar courses, it’s definitely worth considering. The trade off is whether having the convenience of a watch is worth the sacrifice of the larger screen on a Garmin handheld. We lean toward the convenience of the watch and S6 definitely brings something new to the table with the CourseView screen.

If you don’t play many unfamiliar courses or if the S6 stretches your budget a little too tight, you should take a look at our latest picks for the best golf watches currently on the market to see which one suits your style of play.

What users of the Garmin Approach S6 are saying…

  • Many users liked the special features on this watch… SwingStrength, TempoTraining, PinPointer and fairwary touch targeting.
  • As expected, with all those features, this watch didn’t get the best feedback with regards to ease of use and intuitiveness.
  • Many users struggled with getting enough precision with manual targeting. Using a stylus or golf tee was suggested by several users.
  • Some users complained about battery life. Although it should get two rounds before needing a charge, we recommend charging it every time.
  • A number of users were disappointed in the brightness of the display, but just as many were happy with the high resolution color display.
  • Several users felt the swing metrics were worthless.
  • The sound for TempoTraining isn’t loud enough for some users to hear under normal range conditions.
  • Quite a few users felt that this watch was not worth price.

Golf Watches

We’re still evaluating user reviews, but we are expecting the GolfBuddy WT3 will be near the top of our charts when it’s all said and done. The only negative we’ve heard so far is that it’s a little bulky, which is true of most golf GPS watches. This may not be the smallest, but it is packed with more features than the Bushnell neo-XS, which claims to be the smallest.

GolfBuddy WT3 Watch User Rating:
4.08 Stars 4.08 out of 5 (103 reviews)

Score compiled from multiple sources.

The WT3 not only provides distances to the front, back and center of every green, it has dynamic green view which shows you the shape of the green in relation to where you are standing and allows manual pin positioning for more accurate distance. It also has distances to water hazards, bunkers and trees. We appreciate the scorecard feature, but wish it also allowed stat tracking. As with most golf watches, it has a shot measuring feature. Of course, the best feature of all… is the price!

If you ask us to pick the best golf GPS watch, we just can’t do it without knowing a little bit more about your preferences. But here are our top two golf GPS watches and we bet one of them is the right one for you!

The Garmin Approach S4 and the Bushnell neo-XS are very different in several ways. What they do the same is provide distances to the front, middle and back of every green and they will both easily measure your shots. That’s pretty much where the similarities end, unless you want to count the fact that both can be worn on the wrist!

The biggest difference that most golfers will notice before anything else, is the price. The Bushnell XS is currently about $100 less than the Garmin S4, which means that those S4 features better be pretty impressive… and they are, but still it’s not the right watch for everyone. There’s another advantage that the Bushnell holds over the Garmin… it has distances to hazards, up to four per hole. The Garmin has layup yardages to doglegs and targets like the 100, 150 and 200 yard markers, but that doesn’t always help on a new course. On the other hand, it is handy on golf courses you know well.

So what are the features that make the Garmin S4 worth the extra money? Admittedly, not everyone will want or need these features, but for those who do, Garmin did a great job…

  • Scorecard and Stats – A dedicated scorecard button on the side of the watch takes you to a screen where you can easily enter your score. If you choose to have your stats tracked, a simple press to the bottom of the face will take you to the Putts screen and another press takes you to the Fairways screen which allows you to enter straight, left or right for your tee shots. Greens in regulation is calculated at the end of the round. Once you begin using the scorecard feature on any given round, it automatically pops up at the end of each hole, making it even easier. The scorecard and stats feature on this watch is super easy to use and we give it a big thumbs up!
  • Touchscreen – Unlike your smartphone, a light tap on the Garmin S4 face won’t do anything, which keeps you from accidentally ending up on the wrong screen. Once you learn to press the screen rather than tap it, you’ll love the way it works. On a GPS watch with so many features, the touchscreen is almost essential to keep the navigation simple and Garmin has done it beautifully. There is even a “Back” button indicated by an arrow on the left side of the face, that will always take you to the last screen.
  • Green View and manual pin placement – A dedicated button on the lower left side of the watch will take you to a view of the green – complete with the shape as it sits from your location. By pressing the middle of the green, you can drag the pin location to a place more representative of the day’s pin placement and you’ll get distance to the new location. A nice feature for large and tricky greens.
  • iPhone Notifications – The Garmin S4 can connect to your iPhone via Bluetooth and display your texts, emails and notifications. It’s easy enough to set up and use and amazingly isn’t too obtrusive. You can go back and forth between your distance and your messages fairly easily. The only problem we encountered was that we lost the Bluetooth connection and had to take time to reconnect after we had gotten too far away from our iPhones (left them in the cart some distance away).

You know yourself better than we do… Which do you like, distances to hazards or a scorecard with stats and the ability to get distances to different pin locations? Oh yeah, and there’s the money thing, but just remember, you’ll probably be using this watch for several years, so the price per round on either one, is still pretty darn reasonable!

Bushnell neo-X vs neo-XS

The Bushnell neo-X and the neo-XS have both been retired. Check out our current list of top golf watches.

Bushnell neo-X vs neo-XSThe Bushnell neo-X vs neo-XS is pretty short and sweet. These are both excellent golf GPS watches sold at a very reasonable price. Both watches are almost identical in operation, but the neo-XS offers up to four hazard and layup points per hole, versus only two on the neo-X. If you typically use hazard and layup information on your golf GPS, then the neo-XS is definitely the watch for you. If that information isn’t something you’re inclined to use, the decision comes down to appearance and price. The neo-XS has a more rounded shape and is available in three color options – black, charcoal and white. We think it’s the better looking of the two watches, but that’s a matter of personal taste. The Bushnell neo-X is only available in black.
