At the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), a new competitor entered the GPS Golf Rangefinder Game. Celestron, a leading manufacturer of telescopes, binoculars, spotting scopes, microscopes, is releasing the CoursePro and Coursepro Elite Golf GPS devices. At first glance of the features, we don’t see anything that sets these new entries apart from their well-established competitors, save maybe the price.

SkyGolf Introduces AutoView for the SGX

SkyCaddie SGXSkyGolf, a leading maker of GPS Golf Rangefinders, has added a new feature to its latest golf rangefinder, the SkyCaddie SGX. The SGX already boasts a rich user experience with HoleVue, Intelligreen and Intelligreen Pro technologies, but this latest software update takes a page out of the smartphone playbook and adds an element of user friendliness to the SGX experience. Autoview takes advantange of the device’s built-in accelerometer and senses when the user rotates the SGX to the right or to the left. Rotating the GPS rangefinder to the right now gives the user a landscape detailed view of the green using the Intelligreen technology. Rotating it to the left gives a landscape view of the scorecard for easier entry and viewing. We’ll look forward to seeing how users respond to this update.

If you’re an SGX owner, you’ll need to sync your device with CaddieSync and then re-download your courses. Turn off your SkyCaddie, unplug and disconnect from the computer. When you turn it back on, the Autoview update should be ready to go.

The Garmin Approach S1 was the GPS golf watch that changed everything in golf GPS rangefinders. It became so popular and was rated so highly, that Garmin and all the other manufacturers jumped on the golf watch bandwagon. There are now more choices of golf watches than any other category of golf rangefinder.

Garmin Approach S1 Watch User Rating: 4.48 Stars 4.48 out of 5 (1285 reviews)

Score compiled from multiple sources.

There have been many innovations since the Garmin Approach S1 was released, but still there has never been a watch that has stood the test of time like this one. If you’re looking for a great value in a basic golf watch, the S1 is still a strong contender. There are no fancy hole layout views, no distances to hazards and there is no color on the screen… but it delivers 99% of what you would ever want to know in a super easy and convenient package.

You can’t go wrong with the Garmin S1, but if you haven’t made up your mind yet, you may want to take a look at our current list of Best Golf Watches.
