Best GPS for Golf

What is the best GPS for golf? (drum roll please)….. well, that all depends on the type of golfer who will be using it. We’ll break it down for you here or just head on over to our Personalized Golf GPS Quiz. Golf watches are not included in our recommendations below.

Recommendations by Golfer Description:

  • The Course and Game Manager: Knows enough about golf to engage in some course management. Appreciates detailed information as long as it’s easy to come by.
  • The Typical Golfer: Interested in distances to the green and to hazards.
  • “Speedy”:: Plays fast, likes things quick and convenient, doesn’t obsess over details.
  • Big Numbers, Please!: Has difficulty seeing the scorecard or a normal GPS screen.
  • The Hybrid: Desires accuracy, but not satisfied with yardages to only visible targets, which is all that you can get from a traditional laser rangefinder.

Garmin Approach S10 - Read Full Review

We are thrilled that Garmin finally has a new basic golf watch. We think this will be the best-selling golf watch on the market for awhile to come. Why? Because it does everything most golfers want in a golf watch and it's lightweight and compact. On the main screen, you will see distances to the front, middle, and back of the green, plus the hole number and par. The shape of the green is also right there on the same screen. If you need hazard information, it's one screen away. Many golfers won't ever touch the watch after starting a round. A simple glance will tell them what they need to know. You can also keep score on this watch and upload your scores to Garmin Express so your playing history is always available. It doesn't offer a way of tracking your stats, so if you are looking for that feature, check out Garmin's other golf watches.

Garmin Approach G12 - Read Full Review

As expected, Garmin impressed us with this feature-pack golf GPS device. The most exciting thing about the Garmin G12 is the 30-hour battery life! That doubles the battery life of the Garmin G10 and it's 10 hours more than the Bushnell Phantom 2. At this price point, this will be the deciding factor for many golfers. Others will choose this model to use with the Garmin Approach CT10 Club Tracking System. The Garmin Approach G12 matches or exceeds the features of other golf GPS units in the same category. The price is a little bit higher, but if it's in your budget, the battery life, stat tracking, and analysis tools, make this worthy of your shortlist!

Izzo Swami 6000 - Read Full Review

This is one of our favorite golf GPS devices to look at. The screen is bright and colorful and the numbers are large and easy to read. It's also at a price point that we love! Even with the large bright screen, the battery life is still up to 16 hours. Although it has a scorecard, we don't think it's user-friendly and would not recommend this model to anyone looking for a scorecard feature. In truth, most users don't use their golf GPS devices for scorekeeping. If that is important to you, we suggest checking out models from Garmin. The Swami 6000 comes with a strong magnet for easy mounting to your cart or the included belt clip. It has distances to hazards and doglegs, and it has an IPX3 rating which should be good enough for most rainy weather conditions.

We've been a fan of the GolfBuddy Voice line of GPS rangefinders for a long time. Each new iteration seems better than the one before and we hope that holds true for the new GolfBuddy VoiceX. The VoiceX adds quite a few features and a design change. Our favorite new feature is the automatic course update via Bluetooth and your smartphone. We also like the Big Numbers mode and manual pin positioning capability. Additionally, the new activity tracker could be a hit with walkers and runners. Watchband is available separately.

Best Golf Rangefinder for the Money

What’s the best golf rangefinder for the money? Even though prices in this market bounce up and down, we can narrow it down for you very quickly.

Best Laser Rangefinder for Your Money
Precision Pro NX7 Pro - Read Full Review

Our initial hands-on experience with the Precision Pro Golf NX7 Pro has been excellent. It locks onto the flag very quickly and the unit vibrates immediately when it locks. It offers two modes, one with Slope and one without Slope. When in non-Slope mode, the unit is legal in events where rangefinders are permitted. It's simple to switch between the two modes, but not so simple that you're likely to do so accidentally. The price on this is much less than the Bushnell Tour V4 Shift, but the features and performance are very similar. The only thing missing on the NX7 Pro is the ability to check which mode you are in by looking at the side of the rangefinder. The NX7 Pro may also be slightly more difficult to use on hitting targets on the ground for layups, but the difference in price may make this easy to overlook.

The Gogogo Sport VPro GS03 offers several extremely affordable options and the reviews are excellent. Of course, the price is even better! If you're a hunter and a golfer, this model should work just fine for both sports. Make sure to put it into Golf mode when hit the links. If you tend to be rough on your equipment or you play in the rain, you may want to check out Bushnell. The Gogogo VPro GS03 isn't water-resistant and the hardware doesn't seem quite as durable. Still, at this price point and a 30-day return policy, we're giving the Gogogo GS03 a thumbs up!

TecTecTec VPRO500 - Read Full Review

It's the combination of price and performance that puts the TecTecTec VPRO500 in our list of top rangefinders. It used to be that it felt safer to go with a well-known brand when you bought a golf rangefinder. However, when there are over 800 hundred reviews for a product and over 75% of them are 5 Stars, those concerns can be easily dismissed. Well, actually we had to see it to believe it. We purchased it from Amazon and put it to the test. We were not disappointed. It was super easy to lock on the flag, even from long distances. The unit was compact, but the numbers were large and easy to read. It was also easy to range other targets, including bunkers and the ground. The only performance issue we noticed is that it sometimes varies 3-4 yards when ranging the same target multiple times. For most golfers, that's not really a big issue, but other rangefinders in our top picks are typically more consistent. However, they are also more expensive. If that issue is a concern for you, check out our Best Laser Golf Rangefinders.

Laser Golf Rangefinder vs GPS

The laser golf rangefinder vs GPS question can only be resolved by looking at the needs and abilities of the person who will be using it. There are advantages to each and we’ll try to break those down for you here. If you want the best of both worlds, check our Best Hybrid Golf Rangefinder page.

Advantages of Laser:
Laser Golf Rangefinder Review booklet graphic

  • Accuracy – A laser rangefinder will give you near exact yardage to any target you can see (within several hundred yards). It’s going to be more consistent and more accurate than GPS. It also will give the yardage to the actual flag, wherever it is on the green.
  • Learning Curve – There isn’t much to learn about a laser golf rangefinder. The directions won’t take long to read and a few minutes of playing with it and you should have it down.
  • Battery Life – The battery on a laser rangefinder will last many, many rounds. For most users, a year or more.
  • # of Courses – laser rangefinders will work on every golf course and never need to be updated.
  • Magnification – We find it surprising that laser rangefinders are allowed to have magnification. Sometimes just having binoculars on the golf course can be handy for seeing what lies ahead and with a laser, it’s built right into the device. When making a purchase, pay attention to the level of magnification. Not only do you get a better view with a higher level, it’s also easier to hit your target.

Disadvantages of Laser:

  • Hills and trees – If you can’t see a target, your laser binoculars won’t help a bit. Experience tells us that this is an infrequent problem, but when it is a problem, it’s a big one. (That’s when a hybrid rangefinder would come in really handy.)
  • Hitting the wrong target – Today’s laser rangefinders are very good about picking up the flagstick instead of targets behind the green, but it’s still a possibility that you could accidentally get the yardage to the wrong target. The closer you get to your target, the less likely this will happen. Most users will be able to manage this without much difficulty after a little experience.
  • Steadiness issues – Using a laser golf rangefinder does require moderate steadiness when shooting the target. For most people, this isn’t an issue, but for some users, it’s a deal breaker. See our 7 Tips for Using a Laser Rangefinder.
  • No front, middle and back of green distance – Although you’re getting exact distance to the pin, unless you can see it, you have no way of knowing where on the green the pin is located. Again, a hybrid would come in handy for this, but most golf courses provide some indication of where on the green the pins are located.

Advantages of GPS:
Golf GPS Comparison graphic

  • Distance to the front, middle and back of every green – Every golf GPS provides this basic information and it can be extremely valuable. Most golfers however, will do just fine aiming for the middle of every green.
  • No steadiness required – A GPS device will give you yardages without you having to aim it or even touch it.
  • Distances to targets you cannot see – All GPS devices can give you yardage to targets that you cannot see. Most of them include hazards as well as green yardages, but pay attention because some basic models only include distances to the front, middle and back of the green.
  • Hole layouts – We refer to GPS devices that offer hole layout views as “full-featured”. If you’re on a course that is unfamiliar, it’s often nice to be able to take a look at the hole layout before you play it. It’s important to note however, that these types of units have more of a learning curve and can slow you down during your round. There are some “basic” models that don’t include the layouts and in truth, that’s not always a disadvantage. On the golf course, we think it’s important to get information quickly, rather than trying to figure out your device.
  • Bonus Features – Many golf GPS devices have shot-measuring features, scorecards, statistics and more. These features can be fun and useful, but it’s important to make sure they don’t consume too much of your time and attention.

Disadvantages of GPS:

  • Accuracy – Although all GPS devices do a pretty good job with accuracy, they’re not likely to ever be as good as laser. Clouds, trees and whatever else can happen to interfere with satellites will be a factor. It’s not always ‘right on’ vs laser which will be right every time.
  • Distance to the pin – Although some of the full-featured models allow you to tap or move the pin position, it’s still only your best guess unless you have a printed pin location sheet provided by the course or tournament committee.
  • Computers – Although most GPS devices now come “preloaded” with courses, many require hookup to a computer for updates and/or newly added golf courses. Some even require hookup and online registration before they will work. This is the area where we usually find the most complaints from users.
  • Learning Curve – the more features available, the more learning required.
  • Battery Life – With any golf GPS, you’ll need to make sure it’s charged up every few rounds.

Hybrid – the best of both worlds

Although we love the idea of a hybrid rangefinder that does both laser and GPS, they haven’t become very popular. Check out the current models. If you can’t find a hybrid that’s in your budget, consider getting a budget-friendly GPS and a budget-friendly laser rangefinder

You may also want to take a look at our top golf rangefinders sorted by category.

Golf Buddy vs SkyCaddie

The Golf Buddy vs SkyCaddie debate really comes down to three things: Perceived Accuracy, Price and Convenience…

The reason we say “perceived accuracy” is that SkyCaddie’s biggest selling point is that they “ground verify” all their golf courses. The way we understand this, is that SkyCaddie sends real people and specialized equipment out to golf courses to verify that the targets ARE where their satellite images have shown them to be. Golf Buddy relies on the satellite images. Does that make SkyCaddie devices more accurate? It sounds good, but we don’t know if there is any real confirmation of this. What we do know is that SkyCaddie users seldom ever mention a problem with accuracy. On the other hand, most users of Golf Buddy GPS devices are also happy with the accuracy.

Price: The cost of SkyCaddie’s on-going ground-verification of targets are passed on to the consumer, not only in the price of the SkyCaddie, but also in annual fees. Golf Buddy will cost you less off the shelf and there are no fees.

If you’re still on the fence, then convenience may be the factor that pushes you over… Although the recent models of both Golf Buddy and SkyCaddie come “preloaded” with thousands of courses, the current SkyCaddie only has basic information about those courses. Registration, fees and computer syncing are required to get the full hole views. Golf Buddy’s current model has the full view of most courses preloaded and does not require registration or fees to use them. Courses that are added to Golf Buddy’s database after the unit is manufactured can be downloaded to the device via computer sync. FYI… most users who give poor ratings to SkyCaddie, are the ones who have problems with online registration and syncing.

Golf Rangefinder Shop’s Take:

If your perceived accuracy of SkyCaddie has you leaning toward making that purchase despite the higher price and extra work, consider one more thing before you buy… a Bushnell Hybrid laser/GPS. Over the life of the device, the Bushnell should cost less than a SkyCaddie with annual fees factored in. The Bushnell Hybrid laser feature is pretty much as accurate as you can get in a rangefinder. The GPS built into the side of the Bushnell Hybrid gives you a quick glance at yardages to the front, middle and back of the green as well as hazards. If accuracy is your main consideration, the Bushnell Hybrid makes more sense if you have no concerns about using a laser.

If convenience and price have you ready to order a Golf Buddy, it’s probably the right choice for you. However, if you haven’t considered buying a laser or hybrid rangefinder, we encourage you to take another five minutes to explore the laser golf rangefinder vs GPS debate.

SkyCaddie SGXw vs SGX vs SG5

For the SkyCaddie fans out there, here is our SkyCaddie SGXw vs SGX vs SG5 summary and feature comparison…

SkyCaddie SGXw vs SGX vs SG5

All three SkyCaddie GPS devices offer something that no other brand does and that is ground-verified course maps. What that means that is beyond using satellite images, SkyGolf has people walk every golf course with special equipment to verify the yardages. This may give them a slight edge in accuracy, but it does come at a price. Most of that price is found in the required annual membership fees which start at $30 a year. If you’re looking for something without an annual fee, check out the Golf Buddy World or the Garmin Approach G5

With each new device comes additional features, but that’s not always a good thing. The SkyCaddie SG5 doesn’t have the bells, whistles found on the SkyCaddie SGX and SGXw… but it does have the highest user ratings of the three devices.

SkyCaddie SG5 vs SGX

  • The SGX has a 3″ high-resolution color TFT-LCD screen, while the SG5’s screen is a 2.2-inch LCD.
  • The SGX has dual navigation, so you can use the buttons like the SG5, or you can direct an on-screen cursor using a multi-directional joystick.
  • The SGX is preloaded with basic information of 30,000 courses. Registration and membership are still necessary after 30 days.
  • The SGX can store up to 50 full-featured course maps at a time (plus the basic green courses), whereas the SG5 can only store 20 course maps at a time.
  • HoleVue image on the SGX is interactive, which allows you to move an on-screen cursor to adjust the line of play and see shot distance. It can also zoom in and out to help you dial in on a specific point of the hole. HoleVue image on the SG5 is static.

SkyCaddie SGX vs SGXw

  • The SGXw offers WiFi connectivity for downloading courses and uploading scores.
  • The SGXw has a faster processor, but it takes up more battery, so the SGXw gets a maxium of 10 hours where the SGX is rated for up to 14 hrs. In real life, you should charge either one of them after every round.
  • The SGX Joystick has been replaced with an optical trackpad on the SGXw. The jury is still out on this.
  • Dynamic RangeVueTM is new on the SGXw. Preset yardage arcs adjust dynamically over fairway landing areas and over greens to allow you to select the best club for every shot much more quickly.

Full comparison of features

There is no question that SkyCaddie devices offer some nice features and that many users are very happy with them. Looking at our GRS Scores compiled from user data, we would buy the SG5 if we had to buy a SkyCaddie. We got that same recommendation from a Live Chat representative on the SkyGolf website. That said, we honestly think there are several full-featured golf GPS devices that come preloaded and don’t have any annual fees, that make more sense for most golfers. For more on that, take a look at our “quick & dirty” Golf Rangefinder Buyer’s Guide.
