The Leupold GX-4i2 brings something completely new to the table in the world of laser golf rangefinders. It’s the first one to have Slope that can be legally (in the USGA sense) “turned off” with the included chrome Smartkey faceplate.

Leupold GX-4i2 (Slope) User Rating: 4.32 Stars 4.32 out of 5 (53 reviews)

Score compiled from multiple sources.

The truth is that most golfers who are likely to use a laser rangefinder, are also likely to play in events that would deem a rangefinder with Slope illegal for competition. That keeps many of us from buying a rangefinder with Slope and causes some of us to have one of each. The Leupold GX-4i2 solves the problem and throws in some extra bells and whistle that will thrill the truest of golf geeks among us.

Leupold GX-4i2Notable Features
  • True Golf Range (TGR) – Uses elevation, altitude, temperature, and other atmospheric conditions to estimate a “plays like” distance.
  • Club Selector – makes club recommendations based on the True Golf Range (TGR) of your shot and the distances you have previously entered for your 8, 6 and 4 irons.
  • Weatherproof – Not only is it durable and waterproof, it has Fog Mode that will improve accuracy when you play in foggy conditions.
  • PinHunter 2™ – filters out background images and makes zeroing-in on the target faster and easier.
  • Prism Lock – combined with PinHunter 2 makes “locking on” faster than ever before. You get an audible tone when the rangefinder finds the prism, and the distance is immediately displayed.
  • Scan Mode – provides multiple readings in one quick sweep, just hold down the Power button and the display will continuously update with accurate line-of-site measurments.
  • Chrome faceplate – disables True Golf Range and Club Selector features making the GX-4i² “legal” under the rules of golf (per USGA Rule 14-3/0.5).

There are not a huge number of reviews yet, but most users love this rangefinder. The few who did not seemed to struggle with locking onto the correct target. That is the age-old problem with laser rangefinders, while they work well for most golfers, a few will have a hard time holding it steady enough to do a good job.

The Breaking 80 Max 400 gets a lot of really great reviews from users who can’t believe they get the same accuracy as other laser rangefinders for significantly less money. If there’s a down side, it’s that some users report struggling to acquire distance to the right target. It’s a low percentage, but slightly higher than on more expensive rangefinders.

The Nikon COOLSHOT is a bit of a sleeper in the laser rangefinder market. The price is better than other rangefinders with similar features and the performance is really solid. It gets our vote for best value in a golf rangefinder.

Nikon COOLSHOT User Rating: 4.50 Stars 4.50 out of 5 (42 reviews)

Score compiled from multiple sources.

Although the ratings are slightly lower than the Bushnell Tour V3, they are still really strong. The overwhelming majority of user comments were positive, with accuracy, ease of use, size & weight, clarity and quality being the most common themes. Honestly, unless you’re looking for bells and whistles, there’s not much more you can ask of a golf rangefinder.

The only negative that we noted was that the white housing had a tendency to get dirty.

Notable Features of the Nikon COOLSHOT Rangefinder:
  • Compact, lightweight, ergonomic design.
  • First Target Priority algorithm displays the range to the nearest target among the multiple results obtained. You can then exactly measure the distance to the flagstick, instead of a background object.
  • 8 second scan mode makes targeting easier even with slight movement
  • High quality 6x monocular with multilayer coating for bright clear images.
  • Targeting range from 10 – 600 yards.
  • Long eye relief for glasses wearers.
  • Wide field of view (7.5 degrees).
  • Rainproof

The early ratings we’ve seen in our Leupold GX-3i2 review process are incredibly strong.

Leupold GX-3i2 User Rating: 4.70 Stars 4.70 out of 5 (111 reviews)

Score compiled from multiple sources.

You may pay a little extra for this model, but here’s why:

  • Leupold’s Digitally Enhanced Accuracy (DNA) is faster and more precise than anything we’ve seen. Not that most of us need it, but it can achieve accuracy down to 1/10 of a yard.
  • The GX-3i2 has a really easy-to-see red OLED, that makes easy to read.
  • 6x magnifcation.
  • PinHunter 2 technology that makes locking onto the pin easier than ever.
  • Prism Lock combined with PinHunter 2 makes “locking on” faster, plus you get an audible tone when the rangefinder finds the prism.
  • Fog Mode Your will cut through heavier fog better than some other rangefinders.
  • Scan Mode is found on most rangefinders today, but
  • The name isn’t as well-known as Bushnell in the golf world, but this fifth-generation American owned family business has been making high-performance optics for hunters since 1907.
