Our Garmin S3 Golf Watch Review summarizes pros and cons mentioned in user reviews from around the web. From a features standpoint, we believe this is the most exciting and best golf watch on the market.

Garmin Approach S3 User Rating: 4.34 Stars 4.34 out of 5 (522 reviews)

Score compiled from multiple sources.

It’s preloaded with 30,000 courses, has a touchscreen, includes distances to doglegs and layups, allows for manual pin positioning, has a scorecard, shot tracking and more. Although the price of the Garmin S3 is quite a bit higher than other golf watches, the feature set and enthusiasm of reviewers lead us to believe it might be well worth it.

Take a look at what they are saying. Please note that positive comments outweighed negative comments by about 40%.

The Expresso AG50s navigation and golf GPS combo is no longer being made and the very few reviews we saw didn’t give us any reason to recommend this device. Let us know if you have had any good or bad experiences with it.

Expresso AG50s User Rating: 4.00 Stars 4.00 out of 5 (7 reviews)

Score compiled from multiple sources.

Both multi-function models (the Expresso AG50 and the AG1) can act as road navigation GPS devices, golf GPS devices and even portable media players. From a golf perspective, one of the biggest complaints about the AG1 was its speed. The new Expresso AG50 has a swiss-made 50-channel receiver that should take care of those delays. Additionally, the AG50 has a larger and brighter LCD touch screen and besides being preloaded with U.S. and Canadian golf courses, this version includes Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Ireland. The best part about this unit may be the price. It’s less than $200 even before it goes on sale.

Golf GPS Features

  • Preloaded with front, middle and back of green distances, as well as hazards
  • Database inlcudes over 25,000 courses in U.S., Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand

  • Auto hole advance
  • Ability to measure shot distance
  • Scorecard
  • USGA and R&A compliant

Golf Rangefinder Shop Summary: The one thing mentioned more often than any other in all the reviews we read, was how accurate the device was. One reason may be that SkyGolf, the maker of SkyCaddie GPS rangefinders, ground-verifies every course in their database. This means that an actual person goes to the golf course with specialized equipment to make sure the yardages are accurate. All other golf GPS devices use only satellite imagery. We don’t know of any studies that have been done to prove it, but this might mean SkyCaddie GPS devices are more consistently accurate than other units. Although nobody likes paying the annual SkyCaddie membership fee, many of those who mentioned it as a negative, felt it was worth it for the accuracy. Although ‘Annual membership fees’ was the most mentioned CON, “Poor Customer Service” was the one that really got our attention. There were several users who had good experiences with customer support, particularly email and chat support, but there were more who had bad experiences. From telephone wait times to rude comments, over 10% of the user reviews we read, were unhappy with some aspect of technical support. Considering how many users are thrilled with their SkyCaddie SG5, we’re guessing most of them have never needed to contact Customer Service. That in itself is a PRO. We at the Golf Rangefinder Shop have set-up many SkyCaddies and downloaded many courses with no problems at all.

Our Conclusion:
  • If consistent accuracy is the most important feature that you want in your golf rangefinder AND a laser rangefinder isn’t your thing, then the SkyCaddie SG5 should definitely be on your short list. You should also be prepared to defend your decision to pay annual fees (hopefully for more consistent accuracy), as several GPS models are now coming pre-loaded with thousands of golf courses and no membership fees. Also remember that you can only store 10 courses at a time on your SG5 (20 courses after a $20 upgrade).
  • If you have computer phobias and little patience with things like bad customer support, then you should look into getting a pre-loaded golf GPS device instead.

At the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), a new competitor entered the GPS Golf Rangefinder Game. Celestron, a leading manufacturer of telescopes, binoculars, spotting scopes, microscopes, is releasing the CoursePro and Coursepro Elite Golf GPS devices. At first glance of the features, we don’t see anything that sets these new entries apart from their well-established competitors, save maybe the price.
