If you haven’t already had to replace your SkyCaddie SG5 battery, chances are the time is coming soon. Besides that, if you forget to recharge your SG5, it’s easy enough to swap out the battery during your round.

To switch the battery out of the SkyCaddie SG5, remove the battery cover by loosening the screw and pulling back the rubber USB cover. Slide the current battery out and an angle and disconnect. Angle the replacement battery to align the two pegs on each side of the battery with the channels on the SkyCaddie. Slide the battery down until it snaps into place and then replace the battery cover and tighten the screw.

Golf Buddy vs SkyCaddie

The Golf Buddy vs SkyCaddie debate really comes down to three things: Perceived Accuracy, Price and Convenience…

The reason we say “perceived accuracy” is that SkyCaddie’s biggest selling point is that they “ground verify” all their golf courses. The way we understand this, is that SkyCaddie sends real people and specialized equipment out to golf courses to verify that the targets ARE where their satellite images have shown them to be. Golf Buddy relies on the satellite images. Does that make SkyCaddie devices more accurate? It sounds good, but we don’t know if there is any real confirmation of this. What we do know is that SkyCaddie users seldom ever mention a problem with accuracy. On the other hand, most users of Golf Buddy GPS devices are also happy with the accuracy.

Price: The cost of SkyCaddie’s on-going ground-verification of targets are passed on to the consumer, not only in the price of the SkyCaddie, but also in annual fees. Golf Buddy will cost you less off the shelf and there are no fees.

If you’re still on the fence, then convenience may be the factor that pushes you over… Although the recent models of both Golf Buddy and SkyCaddie come “preloaded” with thousands of courses, the current SkyCaddie only has basic information about those courses. Registration, fees and computer syncing are required to get the full hole views. Golf Buddy’s current model has the full view of most courses preloaded and does not require registration or fees to use them. Courses that are added to Golf Buddy’s database after the unit is manufactured can be downloaded to the device via computer sync. FYI… most users who give poor ratings to SkyCaddie, are the ones who have problems with online registration and syncing.

Golf Rangefinder Shop’s Take:

If your perceived accuracy of SkyCaddie has you leaning toward making that purchase despite the higher price and extra work, consider one more thing before you buy… a Bushnell Hybrid laser/GPS. Over the life of the device, the Bushnell should cost less than a SkyCaddie with annual fees factored in. The Bushnell Hybrid laser feature is pretty much as accurate as you can get in a rangefinder. The GPS built into the side of the Bushnell Hybrid gives you a quick glance at yardages to the front, middle and back of the green as well as hazards. If accuracy is your main consideration, the Bushnell Hybrid makes more sense if you have no concerns about using a laser.

If convenience and price have you ready to order a Golf Buddy, it’s probably the right choice for you. However, if you haven’t considered buying a laser or hybrid rangefinder, we encourage you to take another five minutes to explore the laser golf rangefinder vs GPS debate.

SkyCaddie SGXw vs SGX vs SG5

For the SkyCaddie fans out there, here is our SkyCaddie SGXw vs SGX vs SG5 summary and feature comparison…

SkyCaddie SGXw vs SGX vs SG5

All three SkyCaddie GPS devices offer something that no other brand does and that is ground-verified course maps. What that means that is beyond using satellite images, SkyGolf has people walk every golf course with special equipment to verify the yardages. This may give them a slight edge in accuracy, but it does come at a price. Most of that price is found in the required annual membership fees which start at $30 a year. If you’re looking for something without an annual fee, check out the Golf Buddy World or the Garmin Approach G5

With each new device comes additional features, but that’s not always a good thing. The SkyCaddie SG5 doesn’t have the bells, whistles found on the SkyCaddie SGX and SGXw… but it does have the highest user ratings of the three devices.

SkyCaddie SG5 vs SGX

  • The SGX has a 3″ high-resolution color TFT-LCD screen, while the SG5’s screen is a 2.2-inch LCD.
  • The SGX has dual navigation, so you can use the buttons like the SG5, or you can direct an on-screen cursor using a multi-directional joystick.
  • The SGX is preloaded with basic information of 30,000 courses. Registration and membership are still necessary after 30 days.
  • The SGX can store up to 50 full-featured course maps at a time (plus the basic green courses), whereas the SG5 can only store 20 course maps at a time.
  • HoleVue image on the SGX is interactive, which allows you to move an on-screen cursor to adjust the line of play and see shot distance. It can also zoom in and out to help you dial in on a specific point of the hole. HoleVue image on the SG5 is static.

SkyCaddie SGX vs SGXw

  • The SGXw offers WiFi connectivity for downloading courses and uploading scores.
  • The SGXw has a faster processor, but it takes up more battery, so the SGXw gets a maxium of 10 hours where the SGX is rated for up to 14 hrs. In real life, you should charge either one of them after every round.
  • The SGX Joystick has been replaced with an optical trackpad on the SGXw. The jury is still out on this.
  • Dynamic RangeVueTM is new on the SGXw. Preset yardage arcs adjust dynamically over fairway landing areas and over greens to allow you to select the best club for every shot much more quickly.

Full comparison of features

There is no question that SkyCaddie devices offer some nice features and that many users are very happy with them. Looking at our GRS Scores compiled from user data, we would buy the SG5 if we had to buy a SkyCaddie. We got that same recommendation from a Live Chat representative on the SkyGolf website. That said, we honestly think there are several full-featured golf GPS devices that come preloaded and don’t have any annual fees, that make more sense for most golfers. For more on that, take a look at our “quick & dirty” Golf Rangefinder Buyer’s Guide.

Quick Recommendation:

Save yourself the fees and choose one of our top picks for a golf GPS rangefinder.

Pros:

SkyCaddie SGXw User Rating: 3.65 Stars 3.65 out of 5 (46 reviews)

Score compiled from multiple sources.
  • SkyCaddie’s marketing efforts suggest their distances are more accurate because they hire people to actually go to every golf course to “verify” the data they have.Other brands and GPS mappers would argue that using satellites is every bit as accurate. To our knowledge, there are no studies that confirm this one way or the other.
  • Like its predecessor, the SkyCaddie SGX, the SGXw utilizes an Omni-Directional, High Performance GPS Antenna which purports to work well in all terrains and under trees.
  • The SkyCaddie SGXw gives you the ability to download courses from any Wifi connection that doesn’t require a web-based login. That last part of that sentence is important, see the Cons below.
  • Large clear screen
  • Scoring and Stats capability
  • SGClub – uploading scoring and stats
  • HoleVue (when available) giving you the ability to get distance to any point on a hole
  • Size
  • Stores 50 full-featured courses. Basic information for 30,000 courses is preloaded (requires membership after 30 days)
Cons:
  • If you use Wifi much, you know that many hotels and coffee shops require you to go through a website to get access to the Wifi network, so that type of connection will not work. Still, wifi is a big improvement over GPS units that require you to hook up to a computer to download golf courses.
  • You still have to download the golf courses you want to play.
  • Annual Membership fees

Is it worth it?… On some golf courses, SkyCaddie may perform enough better to make it worth the price of the device plus fees. However, if accuracy is the most important feature for you in choosing a golf rangefinder, why not get a hybrid or laser rangefinder. If you’re going to spend that kind of money, the Bushnell Hybrid will give you EXACT yardages to any target you can see AND you get GPS yardages to the front, middle and back of the green, plus hazards.

If “pretty darn accurate most of the time” is good enough for you and you’re not so confident about using a laser, the Garmin Approach G6 comes pre-loaded with more than 28,000 golf courses, has NO ANNUAL Fees and is getting much better reviews than the SkyCaddie.

For those who want to make it even simpler and less expensive, check out the Bushnell neo+ or the Izzo Swami 3000.

We applaud SkyCaddie for the ground-mapping that they do, but just don’t think they understand what most golfers want. SkyGolf obviously does a good job marketing their products, but they don’t get great reviews because their devices are more complicated than others on the market. When you’re paying top dollar plus annual fees, you don’t want hassles, you just want it to work. We think they would do well to offer a simpler device that doesn’t require membership or downloads. They could probably still charge a little more than their competitors by touting the accuracy.

Our SkyGolf Skycaddie SGX Review of Reviews takes into consideration the pros and cons most mentioned by users in reviews all over the Internet. We do the research and pull it together in summary to make your decision a little easier. We also calculate our own GRS Score based on user ratings from a variety of websites, to help you compare devices.

SkyCaddie SGX User Rating: 3.60 Stars 3.60 out of 5 (367 reviews)

Score compiled from multiple sources.

People do like some of the features of the SkyCaddie SGX, but overall, the ratings are lousy, as is the value. The price of the device is competitive, but the problem is that you have to pay annual fees to use it. Garmin and GolfBuddy both have golf GPS devices that get higher ratings and have no annual fees. We suggest checking out the Garmin Approach G6.

If you’re still on this page, below we summarize what we learned from reading user reviews.

  • Hardware problems.
  • Wait times for customer service.
  • HoleVue not available on all courses (SkyCaddie claims to be adding hundreds of courses each month). Make sure it’s available on your favorite courses before you buy.
