Our Callaway Diablo Octane Rangefinder Review research put this model at the top of our list for a long time due to the features, price and performance. Before you buy though, you might want to take a look at the price on the Callaway XHot Rangefinder. It’s identical in size and features, but has a new color scheme AND the price has been similar to the Diablo Octane lately.

Callaway Diablo Octane User Rating: 4.60 Stars 4.60 out of 5 (159 reviews)

Score compiled from multiple sources.

If you want the most bang for your buck, the Diablo Octane deserves a very close look. The reviews are excellent and the price is reasonable. It has a Nikon lens and a 6x zoom in a stylish compact design. Almost all the reviews we read were extremely positive.

Callaway Diablo Octane Rangefinder Features and Specifications

In features, the Diablo Octane Rangefinder is almost identical to the highly successful Callaway LR550. Both carry the Nikon label, have 6x magnification, are waterproof and feature First Target Priority Mode, which aids in targeting the pin rather than the trees behind the green. However, the ratings on the Diablo Octane are higher than the LR550, which could be due to the red and black color scheme! The only difference we noted is a “new slim-stratic sleeve utilizes an independent bag clip that stabilizes to the eyelet of the Rangefinder”.

Our Golf Buddy World Review considers the pros and cons mentioned by dozens of users, along with price and features.

Golf Buddy World User Rating: 3.77 Stars 3.77 out of 5 (102 reviews)

Score compiled from multiple sources.

The Golf Buddy World held our top spot in full-featured golf GPS rangefinders for a very long time. For the price, we still think it’s still an excllent value in this golf GPS category. However, if you’re looking for the latest and greatest, the early reviews for the Garmin Approach G6 are looking strong.

Users of the Golf Buddy World were thrilled about having NO FEES and with the thousands of preloaded golf courses. The accuracy of the Golf Buddy World was mentioned over and over in the reviews we read and the color display was also complimented frequently. However, there were some users who said it was difficult to read in direct sunlight. Tilting it a little seemed to work for most people and it wasn’t generally considered a deal breaker.

It’s worth mentioning that Golf Buddy has two similarly named units: the Golf Buddy World Platinum and the Golf Buddy Platinum (which was released in 2012).

Take a look at our full list of pros and cons below as well as all of the features of the Golf Buddy World.

Most Mentioned Pros (in order from high to low):
  • No fees
  • Accuracy
  • Preloaded with golf courses
  • The number of preloaded courses
  • Easy to read color display
  • Lots of features
  • Auto course recognition
  • Easy to use
  • Helps lower scores
  • Good battery life
  • Good customer service
  • Size and weight
  • Auto hole recognition
  • Scorecard feature
  • Works out of the box (after charging)
  • Price
Most Mentioned Cons (in order from high to low):
  • Difficult to see in bright sunlight
  • Takes a few minutes to locate courses after powering on
  • Touchscreen could be more sensitive
  • Poor customer service
  • Using built-in scorecard can be a little slow

Our Garmin S1 Review Summary reveals a new champion in the GPS golf rangefinder category. Yes, we’re talking about the Garmin Approach S1 golf watch, whose main function is to provide GPS distances to the front, middle and back of the green. No fancy hole layout views, no distances to hazards, no color on the screen… so what is it that sent this GPS golf watch to the top of our GRS Scores for GPS rangefinders? It’s super convenient and super easy to use. That’s not all that users liked about the Garmin S1, but those are the two things most mentioned in reviews we read… and we read as many as we could find. Some golfers will want more features than are available on the Garmin S1, but if you’re looking for something that actually reduces the distractions during your round, this one is worth a look. Don’t stop here, take a look at the list of pros and cons before you decide this is what you’ve been waiting for.

Our Callaway LR550 Rangefinder Review Summary is a summary of pros and cons consistently mentioned in user reviews. The results were so compelling, that we also took this little laser out for a test round and we agree with the users, that this unit works as advertised.

Callaway LR550 User Rating: 4.51 Stars 4.51 out of 5 (225 reviews)

Score compiled from multiple sources.

The interesting thing about the LR550 is that the price has gone up since the release of Callaway’s newer models. Although we think this is an excellent rangefinder, we suggest checking the price of the Callaway Diablo Octane and the Callaway X-Hot and choosing the one with the lowest price. The number one mention by far was how easy it was to use. About 10% of users said that it required somewhat steady hands, but most of those users noted that after a little practice, they didn’t have much trouble.

Regarding the “learning curve” mentioned by a few users, we have to agree that it took us a few tries to figure it out. Since we didn’t take the time to read any instructions, we expected it to work like our old Bushnell, where you push and the hold the button while scanning. On the LR550, you aim first and then push and release the button. You then have 8 seconds to scan. Once we got the system down, we had no problem.

As long as your hands are steady enough to handle a laser rangefinder, the Callaway LR550 should be on your short list for consideration. If you’re not quite sure yet, you may also wish to utilize our laser rangefinder reviews and scores page.

Most Mentioned Pros (in order of mentions high to low):
  • easy to use
  • accuracy
  • quality/durability
  • compact size
  • Price/Value
  • Exact yardage to pin
  • Lightweight
  • Adds confidence to your club selectioin
  • Long battery life
  • Useful on driving range
  • Improves game
  • Scan mode makes it easy to hit target (hold button for up to 8 seconds so you don’t have to have it right on the target when you push the button
  • Get yardage fast
  • Color (the color models are easy to see, so you don’t accidentally leave it in your cart
  • Easy to read
  • No downloads
  • 6x magnification
  • Rainproof
  • Battery doesn’t have to be charged after every round
  • No annual fees
Most Mentioned Cons (in order of mentions high to low):
  • Requires steady hands
  • A little bit of a learning curve if you’ve never used laser before

Golf Rangefinder Shop Summary: The one thing mentioned more often than any other in all the reviews we read, was how accurate the device was. One reason may be that SkyGolf, the maker of SkyCaddie GPS rangefinders, ground-verifies every course in their database. This means that an actual person goes to the golf course with specialized equipment to make sure the yardages are accurate. All other golf GPS devices use only satellite imagery. We don’t know of any studies that have been done to prove it, but this might mean SkyCaddie GPS devices are more consistently accurate than other units. Although nobody likes paying the annual SkyCaddie membership fee, many of those who mentioned it as a negative, felt it was worth it for the accuracy. Although ‘Annual membership fees’ was the most mentioned CON, “Poor Customer Service” was the one that really got our attention. There were several users who had good experiences with customer support, particularly email and chat support, but there were more who had bad experiences. From telephone wait times to rude comments, over 10% of the user reviews we read, were unhappy with some aspect of technical support. Considering how many users are thrilled with their SkyCaddie SG5, we’re guessing most of them have never needed to contact Customer Service. That in itself is a PRO. We at the Golf Rangefinder Shop have set-up many SkyCaddies and downloaded many courses with no problems at all.

Our Conclusion:
  • If consistent accuracy is the most important feature that you want in your golf rangefinder AND a laser rangefinder isn’t your thing, then the SkyCaddie SG5 should definitely be on your short list. You should also be prepared to defend your decision to pay annual fees (hopefully for more consistent accuracy), as several GPS models are now coming pre-loaded with thousands of golf courses and no membership fees. Also remember that you can only store 10 courses at a time on your SG5 (20 courses after a $20 upgrade).
  • If you have computer phobias and little patience with things like bad customer support, then you should look into getting a pre-loaded golf GPS device instead.
