Garmin S2 vs S3 vs S4

In the matchup of Garmin S2 vs S3 vs S4

As of this writing, based on price to features, it’s almost a toss-up between the Garmin S3 and the Garmin S4 The price of the S2 is so similar to the S3, and it really doesn’t measure up from a features perspective. Even though the S3 has the edge on price, the Garmin S4 adds some nice features, that will make it worthwhile for some golfers. Both models have a touchscreen and manual pin positioning.

Here are the major differences in the battle of Garmin S3 vs S4…

  • The battery life in GPS mode is 10 hours on the S4 and only 8 hours on the S3. That’s a nice improvement, but by itself, probably not enough to spend the extra money.
  • The S4 will allow you to track your stats (putts per round, greens & fairways hit, average distance). For some golfers this is important, others have no interest.
  • The Garmin S4 has a dedicated “green view” button that makes it a bit easier to get to that screen when you need it. With the S3, it only takes two steps to get to the green view, but definitely not quite as easy as having a dedicated button.
  • The S4 is a little bit smaller than the S3, but they weigh the same.
  • The Garmin S4 has the ability to display text and email messages and other notifications from an iPhone connected via bluetooth. This is a must-have for some and for others, it’s a deal breaker!
  • We think the differences between the Garmin Approach S4 and the S3 are significant enough to justify most of the price difference, but not every golfer will benefit from the extra features. It’s definitely a personal choice.

If you’re not completely sold on one of these models already, there are some other terrific golf watches out there. Take a look at our Best Golf Watch breakdown.

Garmin S2 vs S3

Garmin vs GarminThere is a winner in the match-up of Garmin S2 vs S3. It’s not because one gets far superior ratings than the other, but it’s because one stands alone and the other loses out to other comparable competition.

The Garmin S2 has very similar features to the Garmin S3, but lacks the touchscreen and the manual pin positioning. The price point is enough lower, that it would be worth considering IF the Bushnell neo-X golf watch didn’t exist. But it does, and given its remarkable user ratings, its smaller size, lighter weight and lower price, the neo-X shuts out the Garmin S2 in our opinion.

The Garmin S3 on the other hand, doesn’t have a solid competitor in the touchscreen golf watch category. The GolfBuddy VT3 might give the Garmin S3 a run because of it’s seriously low price, but for now it’s struggling out of the gate. We think the Garmin S3 is a slick watch and if you can find your way around a smart phone and it fits your budget, you’re probably going to love it!

Best Garmin Golf GPS Watches
Garmin Approach S10 - Read Full Review

We are thrilled that Garmin finally has a new basic golf watch. We think this will be the best-selling golf watch on the market for awhile to come. Why? Because it does everything most golfers want in a golf watch and it's lightweight and compact. On the main screen, you will see distances to the front, middle, and back of the green, plus the hole number and par. The shape of the green is also right there on the same screen. If you need hazard information, it's one screen away. Many golfers won't ever touch the watch after starting a round. A simple glance will tell them what they need to know. You can also keep score on this watch and upload your scores to Garmin Express so your playing history is always available. It doesn't offer a way of tracking your stats, so if you are looking for that feature, check out Garmin's other golf watches.

Most Accurate GPS Watch

What’s the most accurate GPS watch for golf? It’s a question we’re hearing a lot lately as golf watches have become incredibly popular.

We believe all of our top picks have excellent satellite receivers that are quite capable of getting the job done. There are other factors that affect GPS, and on the golf course, trees seem to be the biggest interference.

The question of how accurate the course maps are, is tricky as well. If you’re using a GPS for golf, you will eventually run into some distances that are off. However the feedback we’ve seen on our favorite GPS golf watches is extremely positive with regards to accuracy. Of course there’s almost always at least one complaint. Whether the blame should go to the maps or the trees is hard to say.

The GolfBuddy VT3 watch and SkyCaddie golf watch use maps that have been ground-verified, meaning that someone has actually been to every course and verified the distances. Whether or not this makes those models more accurate is uncertain, however the SkyCaddie watch charges annual fees and doesn’t get reviews that measure up to the competition. GolfBuddy doesn’t charge additional fees on any of their golf GPS products, so we will keep a close eye on the VT3 reviews.
