GolfBuddy PT4 Review
The GolfBuddy PT4 has been retired. Check out our current recommendations for today's best golf rangefinders..
Based on our experience with the GolfBuddy PT4 and on customer feedback that we have reviewed, we are not recommending it. Instead, we suggest taking a look at our current Best Golf GPS summaries.
GolfBuddy PT4 User Rating:
3.50 out of 5 (49 reviews)
Score compiled from multiple sources. We’ve heard from enough users and had trouble with the GolfBuddy PT4 ourselves. We just cannot recommend this unit. We recommend you take a look at our current list of top golf GPS devices.
The highlight of the GolfBuddy PT4 is the size. Unlike other golf GPS handhelds, the PT4 is more like a good sized smartphone. Not everyone wants a big GPS, but it’s really nice to see those full hole views on the 4″ screen and it’s got room for pretty large numbers. Touch targeting is great, but because of the size of the numbers, we often have to zoom into the spot we are targeting in order to get enough precision. Fortunately, it has many levels of zoom, giving you an even better look at the hole. We give the PT4 the edge over Garmin on screen size and readability.
We also like the green view options on this GolfBuddy. Touch targeting the pin is easy and there is a second option for viewing the green, that adds a grid and even bigger numbers for the distances.
The GolfBuddy PT4 comes with a 47 page manual vs. the Garmin Approach G6 that has a four-page manual. There are lots of people who would be thrilled to get an electronic gadget that came with the detailed manual, so that’s a plus. However, the Garmin G6 is so intuitive, that you don’t really need much instruction. With the PT4, you should at least take it with you to the course in case you run into something that’s not so intuitive.
The scoring and stats on the PT4 are not as easy as we’ve found on any of the Garmin models, but then again, it’s not that hard. It’s just a little confusing the first time you press “Score” and it’s asking you which nine you are playing. Seems silly, since it should know what hole you are playing.
We’ve had a couple of problems with the GolfBuddy, but we’re not exactly sure what caused them. On one occasion, it seemed to totally freeze up and since the manual wasn’t handy, we had to wait until the unit ran completely out of battery for it to shut down. Another time, the unit found it’s way to a language with which we weren’t familiar. Let’s just say it took a little luck to find our way back to English. Only more testing will tell whether these issues were flukes or flaws.
In the end, we do not recommend the GolfBuddy PT4. GolfBuddy has done a great job with their smaller voice GPS models, so don’t write them off altogether.

GolfBuddy VS4 Review
The GolfBuddy VS4 has been retired. Check out our current recommendations for today's best golf rangefinders..
GolfBuddy isn’t messing with a good thing. The two predecessors to the VS4, the GolfBuddy Voice and Voice+ are on the top of our rankings charts for a reason…
GolfBuddy VS4 User Rating:
4.41 out of 5 (457 reviews)
Score compiled from multiple sources.they are small, super easy to use and get great battery life. The VS4 builds on that by adding water resistance. Voice and/or digital display provide distances to the front, middle and back of the greens. Dynamic green view shows the shape of the green from your angle of approach and shot measuring gives you direct feedback about your game. Early user reviews are terrific and the price is nice! A watchband can be purchased separately.

Leupold GX-4i2 Review
The Leupold GX-4i2 (Slope) has been retired. Check out our current recommendations for today's best golf rangefinders..
The Leupold GX-4i2 brings something completely new to the table in the world of laser golf rangefinders. It’s the first one to have Slope that can be legally (in the USGA sense) “turned off” with the included chrome Smartkey faceplate.
Leupold GX-4i2 (Slope) User Rating:
4.32 out of 5 (53 reviews)
Score compiled from multiple sources. The truth is that most golfers who are likely to use a laser rangefinder, are also likely to play in events that would deem a rangefinder with Slope illegal for competition. That keeps many of us from buying a rangefinder with Slope and causes some of us to have one of each. The Leupold GX-4i2 solves the problem and throws in some extra bells and whistle that will thrill the truest of golf geeks among us.
- True Golf Range (TGR) – Uses elevation, altitude, temperature, and other atmospheric conditions to estimate a “plays like” distance.
- Club Selector – makes club recommendations based on the True Golf Range (TGR) of your shot and the distances you have previously entered for your 8, 6 and 4 irons.
- Weatherproof – Not only is it durable and waterproof, it has Fog Mode that will improve accuracy when you play in foggy conditions.
- PinHunter 2™ – filters out background images and makes zeroing-in on the target faster and easier.
- Prism Lock – combined with PinHunter 2 makes “locking on” faster than ever before. You get an audible tone when the rangefinder finds the prism, and the distance is immediately displayed.
- Scan Mode – provides multiple readings in one quick sweep, just hold down the Power button and the display will continuously update with accurate line-of-site measurments.
- Chrome faceplate – disables True Golf Range and Club Selector features making the GX-4i² “legal” under the rules of golf (per USGA Rule 14-3/0.5).
There are not a huge number of reviews yet, but most users love this rangefinder. The few who did not seemed to struggle with locking onto the correct target. That is the age-old problem with laser rangefinders, while they work well for most golfers, a few will have a hard time holding it steady enough to do a good job.

Breaking 80 Max 400 Review
The Breaking 80 Max 400 has been retired. Check out our current recommendations for today's best golf rangefinders..
The Breaking 80 Max 400 gets a lot of really great reviews from users who can’t believe they get the same accuracy as other laser rangefinders for significantly less money. If there’s a down side, it’s that some users report struggling to acquire distance to the right target. It’s a low percentage, but slightly higher than on more expensive rangefinders.
